Competency Mapping Process

Competency Mapping Process:

  • Form a group of experts
  • Identify the person whose job is to be mapped.
  • Identify key performance areas(KPAs) and key result areas (KRAs).
  • Group interview of the person, questions may like :
    - Requirement of a successful job.
    - Which activity is most important and which activity takes more time.
    - Factors for promotion and rewards.
    - Reasons for good performance.
    - Reasons for low performance.
    - Asking about difficult situation.
  • After making list of competencies they can be classified into three area.
    - Critical: core competencies of a job , without it job can not be performed.
    - Essential: competencies that are required to complete the job.
    - Desirable: competencies that expedite the job but not critical/essential, for example: knowing foreign language will be an added advantage.
  • After classifying the competencies validate it by peers and superiors.
