Effective Leadership Styles

The job of the leader is to make a person or group self realistic, self motivated and self directed by using variety of behavioral approaches.

A leadership task is always challenging because a leader need to confront with different of people, who have different mindsets and approaches.

All the leadership styles came after examining different kind of people’s behavioral aspects. Following are some leadership styles that are made for different kind of personalities.

  • Coercive leadership style:
    This style is successful only for short time duration, when a leader forces others for doing certain project or task within certain time. This style may also backfire if used more frequently or longer time duration.
  • Authoritative leadership style:
    This style works well when the leader is the master of his own field. An authoritative leader set the boundaries and targets , motivate & encourage people to complete their targets. This is the most used leadership style but it fails when a leader apart from being authoritative does not have enough expertise.
  • Affiliative leadership style: This is the style which increases sense of belonging, People’s emotions their likings and interests come first, where individuals share and enjoy. Affiliative style provides sense of friendship throughout the team. But this style should not be used alone because individuals may get lethargic and inconsiderate to work.
  • Democratic leadership style: Democratic leadership is about taking individuals opinion and advice, it’s all about to draw a consensus from individuals’ statements. This style best work when a leader is bit uncertain what to do and secondly it works when individuals have expertise of the fields so that they can give proper advice. Taking advice from inexpert individuals will no longer be useful and can lead to untoward situations.
  • Pace-setting leadership style: In this style a leader set the standards of performance and he/she actually shows the people by doing the task. Pace-setting leaders expect high performance prone to pin point errors. This style works very well among self motivated and self directed experts. Setting pace to incompetent fellows may lead to behavioral problems.
  • Coaching leadership style: Coaching leadership style wins the trust of fellow people, in this style a leader guide , advice and shows better alternatives.
