Potential Appraisal

Potential appraisal is used for assessing the competencies of an employee for new task or job , whether he /she will be able to settle and grow in new working conditions or not. In potential appraisal all the standard competencies are being set, then checking out the – competencies of current employee are being met with those standard competencies or not.

Steps in Potential Appraisal:

  • Thorough analysis of new task
  • Setting Critical, essential and desirable competencies for new task.
  • Finding out competencies of an employee. Simulation of new task may be a good alternative without letting the employee know about simulation. Simulation can be a leading alternative along with interview , observation and other techniques.
  • Matching of required and existing competencies.

Potential Appraisal Vs. Performance Appraisal

Potential Appraisal is forward looking process whether performance appraisal is backward looking process. Any good or worse assessment results of performance appraisal may not be a good factor for potential appraisal. But current performance of an employee could show evidance somewhere whether he/she is flexible for new working conditions.
