Bhagavad Gita: Satoguna, Tamoguna and Rajoguna – Go beyond them, chap. 14

Krishna says –

  • Physical world is with three gunas (attributes), these are Satoguna, Tamoguna and Rajoguna. Every person, living in this physical world falls in these attributes. [But a person can also go beyond these three attributes]
  • Satoguna is more pure than other two gunas; the people, who are in this guna, their emotions carry bliss and knowledge.
  • Rajoguna is originated from desires and attachments, which leads to anticipations and attachments of results.
  • Tamoguna is originated from ignorance, which leads to extremes or slothfulness.
  • Satoguna leads to happiness, Rajoguna leads to attachment of karma and Tamoguna leads to extremes.
  • Sometimes Satoguna wins over Rajoguna and Tamoguna; sometimes Rajoguna wins over Satoguna and Tamoguna; sometimes Tamoguna wins over Satoguna and Rajoguna. Each of them keeps on fighting for dominance.
  • A person can feel Satoguna, when pure knowledge enlightens that person. Rajoguna increases due to excessive desire, attachments to results, hard working and uncontrolled passions. When Tamoguna increases – ignorance, less light and extreme desires prevails.
  • Death in Satoguna gives birth in higher dimension, death in Rajoguna gives birth among people and, death in Tamoguna gives birth among animals.
  • Pure karma gives pure results, and called Satoguni. Karma in Rajoguna gives pain, and Karma in Tamoguna leads to stupid results.
  • Satoguna gives birth to pure knowledge, Rajoguna gives birth to desire, and Tamoguna gives birth to ignorance, slothfulness and attachment.
  • When one knows, all the work is done by the combination of these three gunas, and knows consciousness in beyond these three aspects, and then s/he goes towards self realization.
  • One, who is able to go beyond three aspects of these gunas,  s/he can only be able to free from – birth, death, old age and problems. And can enjoy the nectar of life.

Arjuna asks –

How to recognize who is out of these three gunas? How does s/he behave? And how does s/he go beyond these three gunas?

Krishna says –

  • One, who neither hates to the presence of attachment and greed – nor desires when they are gone. Who is steady and Imperturbable to the action and reaction of physical attributes, and remains – indifferent and divine. Who exists in soul consciousness, and understands that the happiness and pain are the same. Who is alike for a piece of sand, stone and gold. Who is even to favorable and unfavorable. Who has patience and is even for praise, abuse, and insult. Who behave the same to a friend and to an enemy. Who is not attached to matter and physical work. This type of person is beyond the – three gunas.
  • With non-dual mind, one who is in full devotion to God – soon crosses these three gunas. And, reached to Godhood.
