As the name ‘The New Technology of Achievement’ is of this book, it is exactly the same. The tools and techniques of NLP used in this book are capable to unlock and solve most of the life’s problems.
It is one of the most popular book of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) edited by Steve Andreas and Charles Faulkner. It explores the work of Richard Bandler and John Grinder as well as of the associates and collaborators who participated to NLP. I am giving you the short review of this book and suggest you to check it’s practicability in real life.
The New Technology of Achievement tells the concept of NLP as well as how to use it for: ‘getting motivated’, ‘discovering one’s mission’, ‘achieving goals’, ‘better relationship’, ‘persuasion’, ‘eliminating fears and phobias’, ‘building self-confidence’, ’self-esteem’, ‘positive mental attitude, and ‘peak performance’. This book is a combination of those techniques and insight which are required to see life from different perspectives so that favorable outcomes could be drawn.
Please be relaxed! And have a cup of tea or something because this article is going to be bit longer. I am covering most of the good concepts and few exercises of this book. For them who don’t know about NLP will be an amazing ride to explore mind and senses. I prefer if you read slowly and analytically to each concept and idea which is entirely different for you.
Software of the Brain
It draws a beautiful analogy: mind to computer and thoughts to software programs. Change in software programs (thoughts) causes change in mind as well as in behavior. And when we fail to upgrade or change our software program (thoughts), we also fail to change our behavior – no matter how harder or louder we try; in this case NLP tools and techniques help to upgrade or change our thoughts.
What is NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)?
Neuro means nervous system, i.e., our senses and their pathways; Linguistic means way of communication to self and to others; Programming means our repeated behavior; that is in short but this book give little wider definition of NLP – I need to condense everything so that most of the things of this book could be known in less time.
Please check: Representational Systems or Modalities, Presuppositions of NLP, Disassociate and Associate Patterns, and Concept of Colors and Distances – these concepts will deepen your NLP understanding. NLP is actually learned through working upon it, it is more than the motivational talks and unproved philosophy; it really helps to understand the key ingredients of one’s behavior.
Some Exercises from this Book
Movie Music: this exercise tells to think any disappointing or embarrassing situation of life. And give to it some music (just visualize your favorite music) and now rethink that situation along with hearing music with it. Adding music may look strange to you but it will lessen the impact of that situation. Does it? NLP is full of such technical innovations that really help in life.
The Picture Frame:This exercise again asks to think a troublesome experience. In that experience see yourself in a snapshot (which better represent the whole situation) and from the mind’s eye see that snapshot closer and closer with all the colors as it looks like and again from the mind’s eye give this snapshot a beautiful frame and decorate it as you like. Now think this trouble some experience again, how are you feeling now? Intensity of that experience should be lessened.
NLP is full of exercises and a good NLP Practitioner can better suggest you, which exercise will suit you the most according to your problem. Warning! Without good knowledge of NLP doing exercises straight away might give some problems. Above two exercises are simple just don’t worry about them.
Motivation, Mission and Goal
Motivation: The concept of towards and away from motivation is described beautifully. Away from motivation signifies the motivation of loss and fear etc. and towards motivation signifies motivation of rewards and pleasures. It’s true for getting motivated one needs to have either one or both motivation strategy.
Mission and Goal: In this book, the approaches to Mission and Goal are very realistic and practical and define layouts with supportive examples and exercises to recognize one’s mission and goal.
Relationship and Persuasion
Relationship: For relationship building three steps have been given: (1). To determine mutual satisfying goals, (2). To establish and maintain non-verbal rapport (pacing), and (3). To produce positive thinking in others. In step 2 the main technique of matching voice tone and rhythm is elaborated. Step 1 and 3, are also of good worth to understand and follow.
Persuasion: The myth and facts of persuasion are being told, nice topic for sales and marketing people to master this art.
Fear and Phobias
To overcome fear and phobias, the exercises related to associate and disassociate patterns are being used. Another name for disassociation is witnessing and in Hindu terminology is ’sakshi’. The exercises may be a good solution for depressed and fearful persons.
Self Confidence and Self Esteem
Self Confidence: Self evaluation by critical voices and finding positive intention of the critical voices, later on negotiate and reframe to critical voices and to end up with affirmative self-talk — was given the base of building self confidence. This is very natural and practical way given in the book to make self confidence.
Self Esteem: The content and structure of Self Esteem are explained by Modalities and Sub-Modalities. Exercises are good and mainly the Swish Pattern looks wonderful for building Self Esteem. And the traits of low self esteem people and high self esteem people are of worth noticing.
Positive Mental Attitude and Peak Performance
This book ends up with positive mental attitude and achieving peak performance. Insights and exercises look genuine and practical and once again Swish Pattern example is used for Self Empowerment in Peak Performance.
