Ram, the God of Hindus was used to do meditation at Sun-rise and at Sun-set. Few years back I only knew that best meditation time is 4-5 A.M in the morning. And recently knew best time is 2-5 A.M in the morning. It is true 24 X 7, one can do meditation anytime, highly spiritual people always live in meditative state – throughout the day and night. Let’s discuss the different time periods for meditation.
We will talk in the context of a person who does job, has a family and other responsibilities of life, and wants to do meditation for personal growth. A person who is single, prosperous and has less or no responsibility – for him mediation is easy, but real challenge comes to a person who has family and other necessary responsibilities.
At Sun-rise & Sun-set
Ram, son of a king, he managed meditation at Sun-rise and Sun-set – but to a social person these periods are for getting ready to office and at second slot returning from the office, most of the time in private jobs people hardy notice when sun is set – they only know when day comes and night spreads. The famous “Agnihotra Havan” timings are only at sun-rise and sun-set, looks impossible for working people. People who are self-employed can manage these two times, but looks quite impossible to a person who does private job.
At night
At night, one can create time for meditation, maybe after dinner or maybe just before sleeping. The cooperation of partner plays a crucial role, in case, one is having children, and husband & wife both want to do meditation; they can set different slot one by one – and during that time other is taking care of children. But night looks challenging for meditation, a person has mental and physical tiredness of whole day and with this state of body & mind, meditation turns in a good sleep. The forced efforts are needed, until meditation becomes the part of life. But this is not too hard doing meditation at night, it can be managed.
In the morning
Average time for good sleep is 6-7 hours; some needs more than 7 hours or some less. It is said, when one starts getting energy from meditation, time-periods of sleeping decrease. And one gets more refreshed and energetic in meditation rather than sleeping.
Initially, to wake up early in the morning (2 -5 A.M) needs real courage – it pains a lot to leave cozy bed and heavy sleep. I remember, years back when I was in 10 days meditation camp somewhere, there, we all needed to wake up around 4.00 A.M in the morning in shivering cold for collective meditation. Within few days lots of people ran away, maybe the joy of sleep surpassed the un-started joy of meditation.
One needs to force the body and mind, until one starts realizing the joy of meditation. The day, joy or bliss is realized, then no forced efforts are needed – meditation becomes the part of life, an autonomous happening.
