It is one of the twelve Jyotirlings in Andra Pradesh at Shail Parvat and near river Krishna. You will be surprised to know, why is the name Mallikarjuna? Gods and goddesses, not only change their shape but change their names too: Mallika is for Parvati; and Arjuna for Shiva. Behind this Jyotirling, the story of lord Shiva’s family is connected.
If you want to reach this Jyotirling or any of Jyotirlings in India, and looking for correct information, you should look for the website of their Trust. Most of temples in India are run by Trust, and they have plenty of information, regarding places to stay at night, route, timings, sometimes weather, and many other things.
It is said, worshiping Shiva at Shail Parvat is equal to Ashwamedgh Yagna. This place is also considered as Shakti Peeth, a place for getting different kinds of powers (siddhis).
Story behind Sri Mallikarjuna
Once Ganesha and Kartikeya both started fighting for their marriage; Ganesha wished to get married first, and Kartikeya wished to get married first. Matter reached to their parents, Shiva and Parvati; they said, “Who completes his circle around the Earth, will be married first.”
Kartikeya took his vehicle peacock and sat to his journey immediately. Ganesh’s vechicle was rat, less speedy, whereas peacock flew in the sky; so Ganesh thought an idea to defeat Kartikeya, what he did? Instead of moving around the Earth, he just completed the circle around his parents. And Ganesha was declared winner.
Years passed and Kartikeya returned, and he thought he was the winner ‘coz there was no chance of Ganesh to win the game. But what he saw, he felt heartbroken and cheated: he saw Ganesh was declared winner, got married to two women (Siddhi and Buddhi) and even had two children (Kshem and Laabh). Kartikeya in anger, left that place, and went to Kronch Parvat.
To calm down Kartikeya, Shiva Himself went to Kronch Parvat and appeared as Joytirling — since that time, this place is called Sri Mallikarjuna Jyotirling.
