Story behind Vaidyanath Jyotirling
Once Ravana pleased lord Shiva, and wanted to carry Him in his palace, Lanka. Lord Shiva gave him His Vaidyanath Jyotirling and warned him, if he put it down it would settle there forever. Ravana agreed, and started carrying Jyotirling.
Devatas didn’t like it; so they asked lord of water, Varun Devata to do something. Varun devata entered in his stomach, and provoked Ravana to urinate. Ravana saw a Brahman (lord Vishnu in disguise) and handed over Jyotirling; and asked him to wait for few moments. Brahman agreed and promised not to put it down.
Ravana went few steps ahead to urinate, and wished he’d do it in just a moment — but as Varuna Devata was inside him, it became never ending process. His moments turned in an hour and an hour in many hours. Upto this much time, Brahman was tired, he put down the Jyotirling and went away.
When Ravana came after several hours, he was surprised, angry and frustrated: Why did he urinate so long? Why did Brahman put it down? What was to happened, happened. Lastly he worshiped Jyotirling at that place and returned to Lanka.
